Nairobi hosts regional infrastructure conference

A major conference on infrastructure development involving three regional trading blocs opens today at Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Nairobi. President Mwai Kibaki is scheduled to open the conference that is expected to attract more than 500 delegates, including Heads of State. Others are private sector players and government officials. The meeting will be also attended by delegates from the Common Market for East and Southern Africa, the East African Community, the Southern African Development Community and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development.
King Mswati of Swaziland, Burundi President Pierre Nkuruziza, Angola President Eduardo dos Santos and Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi are some of the leaders expected to attend.
Briefing the press on Tuesday, Comesa secretary general Sidiso Ngwenya said the objective of the two-day conference is to provide a platform to countries to source for funding of infrastructure projects.
“When you have a project that involves more than five countries, there is a need for co-ordination in sourcing for funds and implementation, hence a regional approach,” he said.
Among the projects that will be showcased to potential donors are Lamu , Northern, Djibouti, Central and Berbera transport corridors. The last such tripartite investment conference was held in 2009 in Lusaka, Zambia, and countries will audit the progress made. source: http://www.nation.co.ke/business/-/996/996/-/xt3q8cz/-/index.html
