At the end of Saturday, Kenya was on top of the world with a perfect six medals after pint-sized policewoman Vivian Cheruiyot led US-based dark horse Sally Kipyego and defending champion Linet Masai to a sweep of the women’s 10,000 metres title. Only Catherine Ndereba had won the women’s world marathon title before, twice — in Paris in 2003 and in Osaka four years later — but never before have Kenyan women dominated global competition with such devastating effect. Cheruiyot wins women's 10,000 title in Kenyan sweep
Vivian Cheruiyot won gold in the women's 10,000 metres on Saturday as Kenya swept the first four places at the athletics world championships in Daegu, South Korea. Compatriot Sally Kipyego could not overhaul Cheruiyot in a blazing sprint to the line and took silver, with Linet Masai taking the bronze. Another Kenyan, Priscah Cherono, finished fourth.It was the second podium sweep of the day for Kenya, who also took home gold, silver and bronze in the women's marathon earlier on Saturday. Distance running powerhouse Kenya completed a historic clean sweep of the world championships women’s marathon on Saturday as Edna Kiplagat recovered from a tumble to win in 2hr 28min 43sec.
The 31-year-old, who crashed to the ground with about seven kilometres to go, found the strength to fend off team-mates Priscah Jeptoo and Sharon Cherop to clinch the first gold medal of the championships in South Korea.
