Nyandarua County , Kenya's next food basket?

Agriculture trade fair turns focus on food-rich county
Nyandarua County is coming into focus as the country’s next food basket, as the agriculturally-rich area prepares to host a major agricultural trade fair in November. This year’s Nyandarua County Agricultural Trade Fair to be held from November 25 to 27 at the Ol’ Kalou Nyayo Stadium, will bring together farmers, corporate organisations and government, in an interaction aimed at creating strategic partnerships that will work towards socio-economic growth.
“This is going to showcase the best of Nyandarua county to the country and internationally. Nyandarua is easily Kenya’s food basket, due to its fertile lands and ample rainfall, and with proper exposure, can easily assist in alleviating food deficiency,” says Mr Johnson Hungu, chairman of the event’s advisory board and former Permanent Secretary for Planning.
Delight Promotions Ltd is organising the event in partnership with Ol’ Kalou Town Council and Nyandarua County Council under a Private-Public-Partnership model. The organisers say the partnerships created at the trade fair will seek ways of increasing food production in the region and the country at large, a move that will boost the country’s food security in line with the goals of Vision 2030, the economic blueprint that envisions a country that feeds itself and has surplus to spare.
This will be welcome boost as the country grapples with a shortage in supply of key commodities including maize, beans, rice and wheat, which form the staple for most in Kenya. The fair has been held since 2007 on a smaller scale in Ol’ Kalou. source: http://www.nation.co.ke/business/news/Agriculture+trade+fair+turns+focus+on+food+rich+county++/-/1006/1252598/-/12kmo3b/-/index.html
