Solar power replaces diesel generator at Lokichoggio Airport

A 20 KVA solar power system supplied and installed by Chloride Exide has replaced a diesel generator at Lokichoggio Airport. The new system has dramatically reduced running costs and the generator is now used only as a standby power supply during periodic checks of the solar system.

Engineer Eric Meli, the Chief Technical Officer of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), explained, "Lokichoggio Airport is open round the clock and requires a continuous 12hour supply of electricity. The total running cost of operating the generator for a year exceeded three million shillings and we recognised that this would continue to rise due to the increasing price of all petroleum products. In contrast, solar power is completely free until there is a need for replacement batteries." 1. Solar energy can be described as the energy that is received from the sunlight and converted by a mechanical source for home use. It's cheaper and reliable for operations since the sun is readily available.

  3. I think both options have their own pros and cons. Solar Power or Diesel Generators, never ending debate no one can win. Both options are good.
