New bridge to replace historic Makupa Causeway


The historic Makupa Causeway that links Mombasa Island to the Kenyan mainland will be demolished and a bridge built in its place, Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said Thursday. The causeway between Tudor and Port Reitz creeks was built in 1920s with environmental surveys showing it has had a negative impact on marine life at both creeks.

The History of Makupa Causeway

Initial crossings around the area were made by ferries from Mombasa to the Mainland.
Macupa trestle bridge, the first construction difficulty was crossing from Mombasa Island at Macupa to the Mainland. A temporary wooden viaduct was built in 90 days, while the main bridge was erected alongside. Later named Salisbury Bridge, it was completed in 1898.
